ABOUT
CHILDREN IN THE MIDDLE (CIM)
CDE has developed a comprehensive education program for divorcing
families: Children in the Middle(CIM) . CIM is endorsed
nationally by judges, lawyers, mediators, psychologists, and teachers.
CIM has
received numerous awards including:
- "Positive Parenting Award" by the National
Council for Children's Rights
- "Active Parenting Award" by the Children's
Rights Council
- "Model Program", by the Substance
Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, U.S. Dept. of Health
and Human Services
CDE's controlled outcome research
shows that Children in the Middle is effective (read
newspaper article):
- Parents learn and retain communication skills
- Parents reduce conflict
- Parent relitigate less often
- Children experience less stress
- Children become ill less often

The video contains five realistic family scenarios
showing instances where children are exposed to loyalty conflicts. Scenes
show children carrying messages between parents, being quizzed about the
other parent's life, hearing put downs of the other parent, hearing complaints
about money and their other parent, and dealing with the problems of parents
being late to pick them up and not wanting to go with a parent.
Children in the Middle
is available in two versions: Parents' Version and Children's Version.
CIM includes videos and booklets for both parents and children, materials
for service providers, and materials for judges. Click here
for information about materials or here
to find out where CIM is being used around the world.
Each parent attending classes should be given a copy of the
two booklets, What About the Children and Children in the Middle. These
booklets give advice for reducing the stress of divorce/separation on
children and promote practice of the skills taught in Children in the
Middle.
